APD officers will stand trial for murder in shooting of James Boyd
Summary: Two Albuquerque police officers who fatally shot a homeless man in March 2014 will stand trial on charges of second-degree murder. Helmet camera video of the shooting sparked protests in Albuquerque as people demanded the officers be held accountable. The decision to make the case open to the public through a preliminary hearing followed the riots in Ferguson, Missouri, in the Michael Brown police shooting. KOB live streamed the entire preliminary hearing and I was responsible for writing stories and creating social media posts in real-time, including the breaking news announcement that both officers would go to trial.

The story includes several web video extras and a photo slideshow.

Social worker 'pays it 4ward' to teacher who opened home to four students
Summary: I was responsible for planning the web extras and social media promotion of KOB's new brand initiative, "Pay It 4ward." The first story aired after the Super Bowl. I went through video files to find the perfect web extra element to showcase the emotional moment our anchor surprised the teacher at her school. I worked side-by-side with our weekend web producer to get the TV broadcast up immediately after it aired and coordinated with our Creative Services Department to promote the new series with short videos on Facebook.

Rio Rancho officer shot and killed; suspect in custody
Summary: An officer with the Rio Rancho Police Department was shot and killed during a traffic stop on May 25, 2015. I coordinated with the assignment editor to make calls and write the breaking news story when we heard that an officer had been shot over the scanner. I pushed out the breaking news to our mobile app and email subscribers and posted updates on social media until late into the night. When the suspect was arrested early the next morning, I was the first to break the news on KOB.com

Little girl battles Stone Man Syndrome
Summary: One in 2 million. It may be your odds for winning the lottery, but for 5-year-old Ali McKean, it means a lifelong fight for mobility.
Method: The family of a girl with a genetic disorder that makes her muscle turn into bone contacted WNWO on Twitter with her story. I responded back to the family and coordinated with our morning show executive producer to get them on the morning show. This story was the most viewed article on NorthwestOhio.com in 2012 with more than 40,000 pageviews. My web story was linked on CNN and spurred several aggregated articles, including from The Daily Mail. |
10 therapy horses killed in Oregon barn fire
Summary: After battling flames for two hours, Oregon firefighters confirmed 10 therapy horses died in a barn fire early Thursday.
Method: This story broke during the morning newscast and it was my responsibility to communicate with our reporter and police dispatchers to get the facts up on the website. I instructed our reporter to tweet photos and I uploaded a raw video of the fire as soon as it was sent back to the newsroom. To give the story context, I embedded a Google map of the location of the fire and linked back to the therapy horse group's website and to a community fundraiser set up hours after the fire. |
Deceptive Diversions: Kid apps secretly sharing info without consent
Summary: Gaming apps for kids seem innocent enough, but what information can they access and share? A survey of 400 apps conducted by the FTC reveals 80 percent did not disclose any information about their privacy practices and more than half sent personal data like geolocation, contacts and phone numbers to third parties--all without parental consent.
Method: I localized this report for the February 2013 sweeps period by interviewing a Toledo mom about her son's smartphone use and showing her the surprising loopholes apps use to trick children into buying content without permission. I shot a multimedia extra for my web story by teaching viewers how to disable in-app purchases on their smartphones. |
Death of Sweetie Pie's foster mom ruled a homicide
Summary: The husband of a late Fremont woman profiled by WNWO for saving a hoarding case dog has been indicted on charges related to her death.
Method: For the February 2012 sweeps period, I worked on a report about a local woman who was trying to save a puppy mill dog with cancer. Months later, she died unexpectedly. I kept in contact with her mother and discovered the husband was suspected for murder. When he was indicted, I did a follow up report with the mother and continue to write web stories as his first trial date nears on April 18, 2013. |
